Tamaqua man charged with theft, other counts

A Tamaqua man allegedly munched on candy he stole from two different convenience stores on Valentine’s Day and then resisted arrest when Tamaqua police tried to take him into custody.

Police charged Jonathon Manness, 41, of Tamaqua, with resisting arrest, defiant trespass, disorderly conduct and retail theft following the 1:20 a.m. Feb. 14 incident that began at the Vegas convenience store on East Broad Street.

Police said they were called to the store because Manness was yelling at the clerk and making lewd gestures. The clerk asked Manness to leave but he helped himself to a candy bar and ate it while talking to himself.

Officers arrived, advised Manness to leave and served him with a Protection from Abuse order placed by a family member.

The clerk asked to press charges against Manness for taking the $2 Mr. Goodbar. Officers said Manness remained in the area for a time while pounding his chest and grunting before walking away.

About 20 minutes later, police were dispatched to Fegley’s gas station on Center Street, where Manness stole and ate a bag of M & M candies.

According to police, Manness is not allowed inside the store because of a previous incident.

When officers advised Manness that he was under arrest for trespassing, he began to resist.

Police said it took three officers about 5 minutes to restrain Manness and that a Taser had no effect on him.

He was arraigned on the charges and sent to Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $1,000 bail.
