TASD sets administrative slate to reflect growth
Tamaqua Area School Board continues to shuffle and set administrative positions for the coming school year.
On Tuesday, the board appointed Middle School Principal Christopher Czapla, as director of secondary education, and Special Education Director James Hahn as high school principal.
The board did not discuss the positions but approved a new district organizational chart and new and updated job descriptions for administrative positions.
Those positions include director of secondary education, high school and middle school principals, both updated; assistant principal/athletic director and assistant athletic director.
Assistant Superintendent Stephen Toth, who will be taking the helm as superintendent beginning with the 2026-27 school year, said the district needs to meet federal guidelines for student to staff ratio.
The population at the Tamaqua Elementary, for instance, has grown exponentially, he said, necessitating the change.
“We’re moving a couple of people around in order to meet those federal ratios,” Toth said. “If those ratios weren’t out of whack, we would not be changing.”
The director of secondary education, which is a new position, will oversee both the high school and middle school, he explained.
“Mr. Czapla is going to be involved in the overall operations of both buildings,” Toth said. “The principals will be directing, facilitating and helping with the day-to-day goings on and operations of each of those specific buildings.”
Czapla will also be in charge of the buildings and grounds and will also work on individualized education programs with special education as part of his responsibilities.
“So, his responsibilities will grow,” Toth said. “The principals’ responsibilities lessen.”
The assistant principal/athletic director is also new with combining positions at the high school to allow for additional help at the Tamaqua Elementary, he said.
“This staff is capable of doing that,” Toth said. “If this staff weren’t capable of doing that, I would not be proposing it.
“I have full confidence in Mr. Czapla as well as the other administrators that we have and we will be going out and seeking to execute this plan and do right by both the students,” he said.
The district also stands to save about $120,000 in administrative salaries with the moves. Also, Toth said that he will not be taking a step-up increase when coming on as superintendent with his salary remaining at the same level and then freezing in his second year.
The board also set the salaries for Czapla, as director of secondary education, as $135,000; and Hahn, as high school principal, as $106,385.
