FEBRUARY 16, 1987

James F. Walker of Jim Thorpe announced plans to retire from public office when his current term as Carbon County recorder of deeds expires at the end of this year.

He launched his long and enviable political career as a Mauch Chunk councilman 44 years ago, having served eight years in that capacity before becoming the last mayor of Mauch Chunk and the first mayor of Jim Thorpe.

Walker went on to win election as a Carbon County commissioner, and in his second term became chairman of the board. He later was elected recorder of deeds.

Among the highlights of his career was the construction of Weatherwood, the county home for the aged in Weatherly, during his tenure as chairman of the board of commissioners.
