Letter to the editor: Be Sweet – Support small businesses

Dear Editor,

As Valentine’s Day approaches, many of us are thinking about small gestures that show appreciation — flowers, chocolates, a thoughtful card. This season of love is also a perfect reminder to show some appreciation to the small businesses that give so much to our communities every day.

Small businesses are truly the backbone of our local economies. They create jobs, spark innovation, and help shape the unique character of our towns and neighborhoods. More importantly, they show up for their communities year-round — sponsoring local events, supporting schools and nonprofits, and stepping up when neighbors need a helping hand.

At the U.S. Small Business Administration, we are proud to stand alongside these entrepreneurs. Through access to capital, counseling, training, and government contracting opportunities, the SBA works every day to help small businesses start, grow, and thrive. From Main Street retailers to manufacturers and service providers, our goal is to ensure small business owners have the tools they need to succeed.

Holidays like Valentine’s Day are a meaningful opportunity to give back to those who consistently give to us. When you choose to shop, dine, or celebrate locally, you’re doing more than making a purchase — you’re investing in your community and helping ensure these businesses can continue to support the people and places we all care about.

This Valentine’s Day, I encourage everyone to “be sweet” and support small businesses.

Sincerely,

Jim Spencer

Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator
