Police: Tamaqua apartment fire intentionally set
Tamaqua Police said Wednesday that an apartment fire was intentionally set by one of the tenants who had to be rescued from a second-floor window.
Tamaqua Police, EMS and fire companies were called to the 9-unit at 44 Mauch Chunk St. at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters found an active fire and brought a 28-year-old woman out of the building through a second-floor window.
The woman was evaluated by EMS and police said she later admitted to setting the fire.
She was transported to St. Luke’s Miners Campus with injuries and smoke inhalation. Police said she remains under medical care and will be charged with setting the fire.
A 62-year-old woman who uses a walker was carried out of the building by an EMT.
A second EMT was evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Tamaqua police met with the state police fire marshal who located remnants of a shower curtain within the fire area.
Police said the fire originally started along a wall in the second floor unit and spread within that apartment.
Due to the rapid response of fire companies, the fire was contained to that second floor unit.
No damage occurred to the other apartments and occupants were permitted to return to those units.
All four Tamaqua fire companies responded, along with Tamaqua police, Tamaqua ambulance, Tamaqua Rescue, Tamaqua Fire Police, Coaldale Fire Department and Carbon RIT, with members from Summit Hill, Lansford and Nesquehoning.
