Palmerton Girl Scouts hold ‘souper bowl’ food donation drive

On Sunday, Girl Scouts from the Palmerton area held a ‘Souper Bowl’ donation drive, collecting canned goods and other non-perishable items to help do their part to tackle hunger in the community.

Souper Bowl was held at Country Harvest Market, which is located at 572 Delaware Ave. in Palmerton. Girl Scouts’ Palmerton Service Unit 728, Troop 3112, and Troop 3597 all participated in the food drive.

Girl Scouts in the Palmerton area have been doing similar food collection events since 2011, said Troop Leader Kelly Horn.

“The girls look forward to doing these drives every year, and we are happy to help support the food pantry. We’re thankful to Country Harvest for giving us the space to hold another successful event,” Horn said.

The food drive went from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the day of the Big Game.

As of 11 a.m. Sunday, Scouts had already collected over 200 non-perishable food items.

Many grocery shoppers who were unaware of the event and didn’t bring canned goods were giving cash donations, with about $50 already collected at that time.

Items collected will be donated to the Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches food pantry, operated out of St. John’s Towamensing Lutheran

“The Scouts love it when we get cash donations, because they get to go shopping for food items to donate to the pantry,” Horn added.

A total of 15 Girl Scouts participated in the event, and it was deemed a great success.

Everyone involved is looking forward to next year’s food drive, which could see an even higher number of items donated.
