Township to accept trash bids

Lower Towamensing Township has agreed to advertise for garbage bids.

In December, supervisors agreed to raise the garbage bill by $100 across the board.

That means residents who paid $230 now pay $330, while senior citizens who paid $200 now owe $300.

The new garbage rates went into effect Jan. 1.

Casella is the township’s current waste hauler. When the township sought bids five years ago, County Waste was awarded the contract. County Waste was bought out by GFL, which was subsequently bought out by Casella.

The township’s current contract ends on March 31.

The board’s concern is that the township’s rate will be higher under a new contract.

In December, supervisors adopted this year’s $934,192 general fund budget with no tax increase.

The millage rate remains at 2.5 mills.
