Mahoning Twp. approves Lowe’s solar application
A request for a proposed solar facility at the Lowe’s store in Mahoning Township has been granted.
The township’s zoning hearing board met on Tuesday regarding an application by EDPRNA DG Lehighton LLC.
The applicant sought an appeal of the township zoning officer’s Nov. 14 decision that the applicant’s proposed solar facility is not an “Accessory Solar Collector” use permitted by right in the C-1 — Planned Commercial Zoning District.
The applicant was also in search of a use variance from a section of the zoning ordinance to allow a solar facility be located in the C-1 Zoning District as a “Commercial Solar Power Generation” use.
The premise is zoned C-1 pursuant to the township’s zoning ordinance.
The applicant intends to install solar panels on the existing rooftop of the Lowe’s store at 1204 Blakeslee Boulevard Drive East.
Attorney Matthew Schnell, zoning hearing board solicitor, said the zoning hearing board voted in favor of the application.
Schnell added the zoning hearing board determined it’s an accessory solar collector use permitted, and approved the use in the C-1 — Planned Commercial Zoning District.
He said there was no opposition voiced against the proposal, as just one member of the public attended and did not speak.
