Soup tasting benefits CCTI scholarship

With the constant frigid temperatures affecting the area, one of the best fundraisers was the Galen Glen Winery & CCTI Soup Off held Saturday at Galen Glen Winery, 255 Winter Mountain Drive in Andreas.

Funds raised by the Soup Off go to the Friends of Carbon County Career & Technical Institute.

“Friends of CCTI is a nonprofit that we created about three years ago,” explained Robyn Plesniarski. “We created it to help some of the senior students in the form of scholarships. They can put it towards college or a trade school. If they are going right into the workforce, they can use the money towards tools or licensing.”

The past two years they featured chili. This year they went with soup.

There were five soup entries: “Nonni’s Favorite, a tuscan bean soup; “Wild One,” a chicken and wild rice blend; “The OG,” Chicken Spinach Gnocchi; “Cream of the Crop,” a mushroom soup, and “Sip of Love,” a roasted tomato soup.

For a donation, each participant received a glass of wine and a sample of each of the five soups and a ballot to choose their favorite.

The soups were made either by the school or parents of students from CCTI.

The winner was “Cream of the Crop,” the mushroom soup.

“Thanks to Galen Glen Winery,” Plesniarski added. “They have been very generous to us, allowing us to be here, or sometimes they make a donation. Galen Glen has been a verify community-friendly local business.”

The voters enjoyed the competition, too. Avery Herman from Jim Thorpe stopped by to try the soups.

“I love Galen Glen, it’s my favorite winery,” she said, “and I love to come out and support some local nonprofits and help support the local community.”
