Man with suspended license charged with DUI, reckless driving violations

Tamaqua police have charged a Lansford man with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police said Jerome Saunders, 24, of Lansford, was charged following a 10:27 p.m. Jan. 26 incident in the area of Schuylkill Avenue and Chestnut streets.

Police were monitoring traffic in the area and saw a vehicle driven by a man later identified as Saunders traveling at a high rate of speed and failing to stop at three stop signs.

Police said Saunders then accessed a parking lot on Schuylkill Avenue through a street posted with a “Do Not Enter” sign.

Police ran Saunders’ license information and learned that he was driving with a suspended license.

While speaking to him, Saunders smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking two 40-ounce beverages, police said.

Saunders did not pass field sobriety tests and a breath test revealed he had been drinking alcohol, police said. He consented to a blood-alcohol test at St. Luke’s Miners Campus.

He was also charged with reckless driving, duties at a stop sign, driving with a suspended license and driving at a safe speed.
