Local groundhog to make prediction
Schnogadahl Sammi will return Monday to do what she does best — predict the weather to a group gathered at sunrise at Kresgeville Eatery & Bar.
“We will gather at 6:45 a.m. at the edge of the field for the ceremony, which includes a prayer and the prediction in both English and Pennsylvania Dutch,” said Bruce George, president of Groundhog Lodge No. 6 of Monroe County. “We hope the community comes out to join us.”
Bob Andrews, a member of the lodge and retired teacher, will consult with Sammi and then share the prediction. If Sammi sees her shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If she does not see it, there will be an early spring.
Sammi, their taxidermied mascot, lives in a closet in George’s home and Groundhog Day is her big day out among the community. She also attends the lodge’s yearly banquet at the end of February.
The group has been meeting at the diner, which was previously called Cherry’s Sunset Diner, for about three decades with the exception of the two years during the pandemic.
Each year’s ceremony draws a crowd of about 40 spectators, both young and old. The event is an opportunity to keep the Pennsylvania Dutch language and valued traditions alive.
After the ceremony, many of the spectators go inside for breakfast, coffee and conversation.
While Sammi and her inner circle keep the tradition going in Kresgeville, Punxsutawney Phil and his entourage will celebrate their 140th gathering and prediction on Gobbler’s Knob.
