Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 20

The Pleasant Valley boys and girls basketball teams both posted wins over East Stroudsburg North on Tuesday, while the Weatherly boys edged Nativity.

In other action, Marian and Tamaqua split their swim meet.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pleasant Valley- ES North

Sebastian Sacci scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to help Pleasant Valley earn a 55-45 EPC victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Pleasant Valley trailed 41-37 after three quarters, but Sacci rallied the Bears, who outscored the Timberwolves 18-4 in the final stanza.

Jake Loch scored eight of his 21 points in the third quarter that helped PV climb back into the game after halftime.

Brandon Jeffers topped Eastburg North with 13 points.

Weatherly-Nativity

In a battle of leading scorers in the Schuylkill League, Ian McKeegan recorded 15 of his team-high 32 points in the final quarter to help Weatherly edge Nativity, 69-68.

Trey Keating, who recently became the fourth player in Schuylkill League history to break the 2,000-point barrier, poured in 31 of his game-high 35 points in the second half that kept the Hilltoppers within striking distance.

Both teams recorded 30 points in the final quarter.

Dominick Kokinda, who also was a huge part of the Wreckers’ fourth quarter, posted 13 of his 21 points in the final stanza.

Jim Thorpe-Notre Dame GP

Notre Dame doubled up Jim Thorpe at halftime, and the Crusaders cruised to a 78-46 Colonial League victory.

The host Crusaders, who won their eighth straight and remained undefeated in league play, stomped out to a 26-12 lead after one quarter and held a 46-23 advantage at intermission.

ND’s Justin Manning was the game’s high scorer with 18 points.

Pierre Gothard topped Thorpe with 14 points, while Brody Schrantz added 13.

Blue Mountain dominated the first two quarters, and the Eagles soared to a 74-40 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Cohen Werner tallied a game-high 19 points to lead Blue Mountain, which held a 47-24 halftime lead.

Jakin Tamagini totaled 11 points for Tamaqua, while Gavin Edmonds chipped in with nine.

Notre Dame GP-Jim Thorpe

In Colonial League action, Notre Dame made it seven straight wins with a 48-27 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Ava Hobbie netted 10 of her game-high 12 points in the second quarter, in which the Crusaders posted 28 points.

ND’s Brenna Hammerstone recorded all 10 of her points in the first half.

Brooklyn Yuhas was the lone Olympian in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Teammate Ciara Lees chipped in with seven.

Pleasant Valley-ES North

Pleasant Valley built an early cushion and never looked back in a 53-28 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.

The Bears controlled the tempo from the opening quarter, using balanced scoring and consistent defensive pressure to take a 26-11 lead into halftime and keep the Timberwolves from finding any offensive rhythm.

Noelle Wolff led Pleasant Valley with a game-high 14 points, while Rylann Knapp added eight and Keegan Merklin and Amaya Fuentes added seven apiece as the Bears spread the scoring load.

Eastburg North was paced by Rianna Burgos, who scored 12 points.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-Marian

In a Schuylkill League meet, Marian and Tamaqua earned a split.

The Colts edged the Blue Raiders 63-52, while the Tamaqua girls gained a 105-35 victory over the Fillies.

The Raiders’ Savannah Wilson posted individual wins in both the 100 breaststroke and the 500 freestyle. She also swam a leg on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

The Colts’ Andrew Metters and Michael Strucko both captured multiple firsts. Metters took the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, while Strucko won the 50 and 100 freestyle. Metters and Strucko took part in the Colts’ 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Blue Mountain came out on top against Tamaqua 50-44.

Spolski paced the Eagles with 15 points.

Chayse Barron scored 25 for the Blue Raiders to lead all players, while Cain Conner added 10.

7th Grade

Panther Valley-Sch. Haven

Panther Valley defeated Schuylkill Haven 47-21.

Keion Wheeler of the Panthers scored a game-high 13 points, while teammate Owen Alves added 12 and Mason McDonald chipped in with eight.

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Tamaqua defeated Blue Mountain 36-27.

Chayse Barron finished with a game-high 14 points for the Raiders, while Jakson Perez added nine.

Henderson led the Eagles with eight.

Weatherly-Nativity

In a tightly played contest, Weatherly edged Nativity 41-40.

Silas Zink led the Wreckers with 14 points, while Carter Minnick added 10.
