The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said Friday a sinkhole developed in the southbound lane of Route 33, between the exits for Route 191 and Tatamy.
Spokesman Sean Brown said the sinkhole is around mile marker 8.7.
He reported crews were on site with equipment to excavate around the hole and fill if needed.
Traffic is down to one lane and crews will attempt to do the work with one lane open.
He said no time frame has been determined for completion of the work.
