Mayberry named Slatington council president
At Slatington Borough Council’s annual reorganization meeting, council members selected new leadership and approved a series of appointments, resolutions and committee assignments for 2026.
Mayor Jeralyn Schoch opened the meeting by calling for nominations for council president. Incumbent President Dave Schnaars and Councilman Ryan Mayberry were nominated. By a 4-2 vote, Mayberry was elected as the new council president.
Schoch then called for nominations for vice president, with Schnaars and Councilman Aaron Schoch nominated. Schnaars was elected vice president by a 4-2 vote.
For president pro tem, Councilman William Schippers was the sole nominee and was unanimously approved.
Because Mayberry was not present at the meeting, Schoch turned the meeting over to newly elected Vice President Schnaars.
Council approved the continuation of several borough appointments, including Lisa Young as borough solicitor; Roy Hambrecht as borough manager, secretary, treasurer and open records officer; Accela as borough engineer; Cowan Associates as special sewer engineer; David Hay as health inspector, health officer and ordinance enforcement officer for grease traps; Keystone Consulting Engineers as zoning officer and ordinance enforcement officer for grease traps; Police Chief William Borst; and Karen Leach as assistant secretary and treasurer.
District Judge Tom Creighton swore in newly elected Councilmen Robert Krebs and Andy Hassold.
Krebs said, “I’m inspired how everyone in the community just comes together when there is a fire or other emergencies in our area and works together. I look forward to knowing the job and looking for challenges.”
Hassold said, “My goal will be to enjoy serving our community the best way I can as I learn this job.”
Several new appointments were also made. Assistant Chief Justin Frable was promoted to fire chief. Anthony Lenhart was named fire police captain for the Slatington Fire Department, and firefighter Austin Berger was appointed emergency management director. Ryan Mayberry was named council chaplain, and Kris Burek was appointed to the Police Pension Committee for a two-year term.
Council appointed sewage enforcement officers for the borough, and approved borough depositories including Key Bank, PLGIT for certificates of deposit, and principal for pension funds.
Anthony Lopsonzski was not reappointed as ordinance enforcement officer following a 3-3 tie vote. Schoch cast the tiebreaking vote against the reappointment.
Council also approved the addition of new borough holidays for 2026: Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19, Presidents Day on Feb. 16, Juneteenth on June 19, and Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
Council approved advertising a revised 2026 meeting schedule.
Committee assignments for 2026 were also announced. Finance, Planning and Zoning will be handled by Dave Schnaars, Kevin Steckel and William Schippers. Human Community Services will include Kevin Steckel and Dave Schnaars. The Water Committee will consist of Robert Krebs, Aaron Schoch and Andy Hassold. Highway Committee members are Aaron Schoch, Andy Hassold and Robert Krebs. Public Safety will include William Schippers, Kevin Steckel and Dave Schnaars. Sewer and Solid Waste will be overseen by Andy Hassold, Aaron Schoch and Robert Krebs.
