Weissport welcomes council, Sonon as mayor

The Borough of Weissport welcomed its new mayor, Jodi Sonon, to the Borough Council meeting Monday night.

Sonon replaces Paulette Watson who chose not to run for mayor in the last election.

Council held its reorganizational meeting, with newly elected Council members Shelly Fisher, Tim Rehrig, and Andrew Hottenstein, taking the oath of office administered by Borough Secretary/Treasurer Cheryl Miller.

Fisher and Hottenstein joined the borough council on May 19, 2025, to fill positions vacated by previous council members. Rehrig joined the council later to fill the seat vacated by Colton Breiner.

Arland Moyer Sr. was reelected to the position of president of the borough council.

Moyer and Tim Rehrig were the two nominees. The vote was two for Moyer and two for Rehrig. Weissport’s new Mayor Jodi Sonon cast the tie-breaking vote for Moyer.

Council member Shelly Fisher was the sole nominee for Vice President. The vote again was 2 to 2.

Sonon cast the tie-breaking vote for Fisher.

Bill Hartzell, whose term had ended in December, was reelected by borough council to fill the fifth seat on the council.

The position of Secretary/Treasurer was tabled until after an executive session.

Mike Muffley was reappointed to borough engineer. Brent Green was reappointed code enforcement officer. Greg Mousseau was reappointed borough solicitor.

A motion to reappoint Kirk Summa & Co. as auditors for the borough was tabled.

Borough Secretary/Treasurer Cheryl Miller pointed out that Summa was doubling their rates from $5,000 to $10,000. Council decided to look at other options.

A motion was made to order another pallet of ice at a cost of $500.

A motion was made to have the secretary/treasurer be the one to open the borough mailbox and collect mail and distribute it to where it needs to go.

Following an executive session, a motion was made and passed to continue to have Cheryl Miller serve as the Weissport Borough Secretary/Treasurer for 2026.

A motion was made to transfer garbage collection and billing to the Borough Secretary/Treasurer Cheryl Miller.

According to Solicitor Greg Mousseau, handling the garbage fees and billing always was the job of the Secretary/Treasurer according to the borough code. The vote was 2 yes, 2 no, and one abstained. The motion failed.

Another motion was then made and passed to remove Lynette Moyer from collecting garbage and billing customers. The work will default back to the Secretary/Treasurer, as indicated in the borough code.

Weissport Tax Collector Lynette Moyer resigned following a heated exchange with members of the borough council.
