Tamaqua reorganizes, retains Connely as president

Tamaqua will start the year with a new mayor and two new borough council members.

Before the start of Monday’s reorganization meeting, Tamaqua Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer issued oaths of office to Mayor Dave Clemson and newly elected councilmen George Haldeman and Kyle Oliphant.

Councilwoman Kathy Kunkel also took the oath of office, having been reelected to council in November’s general election.

The reorganization saw Brian Connely return to the role of council president on a nomination by Councilman Ron Bowman and a second by Kunkel.

Bowman will again take the seat as vice president after his nomination was made by Kunkel and seconded by Councilman Robert Amentler.

Kunkel was appointed president pro tem.

Council meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month except for legal holidays and election days, when the meeting will be moved to the next day.

Council committees were also set with:

• Building and Equipment: Jay Hollenbach Jr., chairman; and members Bowman and Connely.

• Finance, Wage and Salary: Bowman, chairman; and members Haldeman and Kunkel.

• Neighborhoods, Downtown and Historic District: Oliphant, chairman; and members Hollenbach and Kunkel.
