Nesquehoning seats council, fills vacancy

Nesquehoning Borough Council reorganized Monday night, swearing in two new council members, as well as approving a new council president and vice president.

During the reorganization meeting, Joshua Jacobs, who won his first term on borough council, was sworn in by Mayor Tom Kattner.

Council then unanimously voted Bruce Nalesnik to serve as the council president; and Lois Kuba to serve as vice president. Councilwoman Lisa Shubeck, who was reelected this past November, was absent.

After the board organized, council briefly discussed the vacant seat created by the passing of longtime Councilwoman Mary Fox. Fox had served as vice president of council and had been reelected to another four-year term this past November.

Council agreed that instead of advertising for applications, the seat would be filled by William Bamford. Bamford had been on the November ballot, but lost his bid by four votes.

His appointment was approved without opposition.

In addition to council seats, the board voted to reappoint attorney Robert Yurchak as the borough solicitor; ARRO Engineering as the borough engineer; John McArdle as the emergency management coordinator and fire marshal; ARRO Consulting as the sewage enforcement officer; Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank and Mauch Chunk Trust Company as the borough’s depositories; and Kirk, Summa and Company LLP as the borough auditor.

Water authority and planning commission members were also approved for reappointment.

Nesquehoning’s monthly council meetings will take place at 6 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month except November and December, when it will take place the third Wednesday of the month.

Workshop meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month except July, August, November and December, when no workshop will be held.
