Lehighton Council ousts leader
After 32 years as president of Lehighton Borough Council, Grant Hunsicker found himself in somewhat unfamiliar territory.
Upon the appointment of Councilman Dave Zimmerman as president of borough council at Monday’s reorganization meeting, Hunsicker had to relinquish the role he’s held since 1994.
On a 6-1 vote, borough council appointed Zimmerman as president. Councilman Joe Flickinger was opposed.
Immediately after taking over the mantle, Zimmerman was quick to recognize Hunsicker for his contributions.
“I am not replacing Grant Hunsicker because I cannot replace Grant Hunsicker,” Zimmerman said. “Mr. Hunsicker has been and continues to be a pillar in our community and a cornerstone to this council.
Zimmerman noted he “would be negligent in my duties if I didn’t take a moment to personally thank him for serving 32 years as president of Lehighton Borough Council and continues to serve as councilman.”
“I will not pretend that I can match his ability or longevity, but I hope to match the strength, honor and integrity that he has brought to this position for so many years,” he said. “Please join me in thanking our ‘forever’ president, Mr. Grant Hunsicker.”
A round of applause followed.
After the meeting, Hunsicker noted that he still has two more years left on his current term, and knew this was coming beforehand.
“I’m not mad; that’s the way it is,” Hunsicker said. “I was hoping to get two more years out of it.”
Hunsicker, who has served on borough council for 50 years, noted that he’s seen a lot of turnover in his time.
“I went through a lot of presidents,” he said. “A lot of people that have passed away.”
Hunsicker was grand marshal for the 54th annual Lehighton Halloween Parade held in October.
