Quite a few local wrestlers had successful weekends at various tournaments.

At least nine of them posted undefeated marks in dual action.

On the court, Weatherly earned wins in both boys and girls action.

BOYS WRESTLING

Lehighton

Indian Duals

A number of area wrestlers went undefeated during all five of their matches at the Indian Duals.

Three from Lehighton, and two from Pleasant Valley, concluded the annual event with 5-0 records.

Evan Wentz — at 172 pounds — and Marc Macias — at 285 — both posted four pins and a decision win for the Indians, who went 4-1 as a team. The host club also received a 5-0 effort from Evan Wentz at 152. Wentz recorded two falls and a tech fall, and was handed two forfeit victories.

The Bears, who ended 3-2 as a team, were paced by Evan Gillespie and Shawn Radcliffe.

Gillespie remained undefeated this season with his 5-0 performance. The PV senior, at 215, gained all his wins by fall at the duals, with each one coming in the first period, and four of them occurring in under a minute. Radcliffe, meanwhile, recorded five different wins. The 121-pounder posted a pin, a tech fall, a major and a decision while also receiving a forfeit.

Nine locals finished with 4-1, three from Lehighton, three from Pleasamt Valley, two from Jim Thorpe and one from Panther Valley.

They included the Indians’ Lukas Croizier (145, two pins), Ryder Croizier (114, one pin) and Jack Lucykanish (133, 1 pin); the Bears’ Adis Vukel (189, three pins), Jimmy Stipeck (133, one pin) and Frederick Merklin (285, two pins); Jim Thorpe’s Connor Zurawa (172, four pins) and Brian Reese (107, three pins); and Panther Valley’s Landon Hunsicker (127/133, one pin).

Lehighton’s only team loss came to North Schuylkill, who was 5-0, in a controversial ending. The Indians finished a point ahead of the Spartans, but the officials took away a team point because of what was determined to be an excessive celebration. With the match tied after the deduction, the first tiebreaker criteria — team points deducted — came into play and gave North Schuylkill the win.

Pleasant Valley gained wins against Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley and East Stroudsburg North, while falling to North Schuylkill and Manheim Central.

The Olympians were 1-4, defeating Panther Valley. The Panthers finished 0-5.

Parkland Winter Duals

Northwestern’s Vinnie Fuggazotto and Luke Fuggazotto both went 6-0 at the Parkland Winter Duals, while their team finished with a 4-2 record.

The Tigers gained wins against Abington Heights, Bangor, Hatboro-Horsham and La Salle College, but fell to Counci Rock South and Northampton. The Konkrete Kids took the team title with a 6-0 mark.

Wrestling at 215 pounds, Luke Fugazzotto collected four first-period pins and a pair of forfeit wins. His brother, Vinnie Fugazzotto at 189, also posted four falls while adding a tech fall and a forfeit.

Northwestern’s Nolan Koehler also had a successful tournament, going 5-1 with three pins and two forfeits.

Tigers to finish 4-2 included Logan Heeps (107), Trent Croll (145) and Braydon Uricchio (152/160).

Hawk Mountain Duals

Tamaqua competed in the 10-team Hawk Mountain Duals and finished with a team mark of 1-4.

The Blue Raiders defeated Octorara 31-30, but dropped matches to Southern Columbia, Williams Valley, Hamburg and Oley Valley.

Rylan Reitz posted a 4-1 mark at 121/127 pounds. Reitz had a pin, and was the beneficiary of three forfeit victories.

Tamaqua also received 3-2 records from Brody Schlier at 139, and William Behun at 285. Behun posted a pair of falls, while Schlier had one pin.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Parkland Winter Duals

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks and Alissa Williams both recorded 3-0 marks at the Parkland Winter Duals.

Banks posted two pins — in 27 and 24 seconds — at 235 pounds and gained a forfeit win to run her season mark to 13-0 (10 pins, three forfeits). Williams (170), meanwhile, finished with a pin, a tech fall and a forfeit to improve to 13-1 (nine pins).

Anelia Bennick (155) and Amelia Spino (118/124) each added 2-1 records, with both their wins being pins.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, the individual success didn’t result in team victories as PV finished 0-3, losing to Parkland, Pennsbury and Delaware Valley.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Weatherly-

Salem Christian

Weatherly pushed its winning streak to five games, as the Wreckers cruised to an 89-49 non-league victory over Salem Christian.

The Wreckers’ Ian McKeegan poured in a game-high 27 points, while Corbin Wagner also connected for 21.

The winners, who jumped out to a 28-point half time lead, also received 16 points from Niko Saldukas.

Gavin Weigner paced the Defenders with a team-high 17 points.

Kutztown

Northwestern sprinted to an early lead, and the Tigers coasted to a 59-45 non-league victory over host Kutztown.

Mason Bollinger spearheaded Northwestern’s efforts with 20 points, as the Tigers took a 29-15 halftime advantage.

The Tigers, who snapped a three-game losing streak, also received nine points from both Brad Krimmel and Malachi Coleman.

Andre Lane paced the Cougars with 19 points.

Cam Smith had seven of his 12 points in the final quarter to help push Mahanoy Area past Marian, 57-53, in non-league action.

Mahanoy Area had a 42-41 lead entering the fourth frame. Greg Tirpak helped bring the Colts back when he tallied nine of his team-high 17 points in the third quarter.

Justin De La Cruz chipped in with 10 for Marian, who had three players sidelined.

Justin Bowman staked Mahanoy Area to a 37-24 halftime advantage when he registered 18 of his game-high 21 points over the first two quarters.

In a non-conference contest, Weatherly registered a 28-19 victory over Salem Christian.

The Wreckers’ Kelly Reiner led all scorers with 10 points, while teammate Alexia Kehler finished with eight.

Maddy Karmazin paced the Defenders with a team-high nine points.

Weatherly returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Tri-Valley.

Northwestern-NDGP

In a key Colonial League contest, Notre Dame outscored Northwestern in every quarter to pull away for a 48-33 victory.

The Tigers, who entered the game undefeated in CL play, trailed by eight at halftime and couldn’t rally in the second half.

Riley Boyle led Notre Dame with 15 points, while Ava Hobbie added nine.

Northwestern, which shot 14-of-16 from the free throw line but managed only eight field goals, received a team-high 12 points from Natalie Conner.

Tamaqua and Salisbury split their non-league meet.

The Blue Raider girls posted a 99-75 victory, while the Falcon boys posted a 77-43 win.

Shaylee Gormley registered a pair of individual first-place finishes. Gormley took both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Other Raiders to gain individual wins included Thomas Graham (100 free), Gia Clemson (diving), Janna Brown (100 free), Kate Behun (100 back) and Savannah Wilson (100 breast).
