Man charged with possession of stolen gun, drugs

A Palmerton man is facing multiple charges after police said they found a stolen handgun and drugs during a vehicle investigation in Lehighton.

Police said officers found 30-year-old Shane Grohotolski slumped behind the wheel of a running vehicle in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot on Dec. 24. After waking him, officers noted erratic behavior, enlarged pupils and repeated attempts to reach for a nearby jacket.

Police observed a rolled $1 bill on the center console, which Grohotolski said he used to snort Xanax. He also produced a glass vial containing marijuana. He failed several sobriety tests and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said. He refused a blood test.

After a search warrant was obtained, police found a loaded Springfield XDS .45-caliber handgun in the black leather jacket. The gun had been reported stolen from state police.

Officers also recovered about 34 grams of methamphetamine, additional suspected drugs, drug packaging materials, a spoon, pills and extra ammunition.

Police said Grohotolski is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to an active protection-from-abuse order.

Grohotolski is charged with prohibited possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, drug delivery and possession offenses, DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is being held in Carbon County Correctional Facility on $50,000 straight bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Jan. 14 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz.
