Palmerton woman follows sister with 100-year mark
Not too many people can say they lived to the ripe old age of 100.
Helen Louise Reitz can stake that claim, and just so happens to be the second member of her family to reach the century mark.
Reitz turned 100 years old on Wednesday, with a New Year’s Eve and 100th birthday celebration held at The Palmerton.
That Reitz has been able to live such a long prosperous life could be a clear indication that it’s in her genes.
“I can’t believe it,” Reitz said. “People went to such an effort for my birthday.”
So, what exactly does Reitz chalk her longevity to?
“Good health,” she said. “I have had a wonderful family; they made all this possible.”
Reitz was also quick to praise The Palmerton, for which she said is blessed with a “wonderful staff.”
State Rep. Doyle Heffley, as well as a representative from state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie’s office, both presented Reitz with citations.
Born in Worcester on Dec. 31, 1925, she is the beloved wife of Ray Reitz, the proud mother of three children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Formerly of Jim Thorpe, Reitz worked as a secretary at CCTI for many years, during which time she was known for her reliability and strong work ethic. Active in her community, she volunteered her time with 4-H for 36 years.
Reitz, whose maiden name was Rothenberger, was baptized at Schwenkfelder Church in Lansdale.
She drove to high school and picked up her neighbor.
In addition, Reitz has her pilot’s license, but hasn’t flown since 1947. She and her brother owned a plane,
Her older sister, Margaret, lived until she was 103.
Reitz loved to ski, loves the beaches, and loved to travel.
