Palmerton FD responds to fire caused by dryer
No one was injured in a house fire that broke out early Wednesday morning in Palmerton.
Borough fire Chief Jason Behler said the call came in at 6:26 a.m. for a reported dwelling fire at 647 Franklin Ave.
“When I got there, the homeowner said she was doing laundry and had clothes in the dryer and it ended up being a dryer fire,” Behler said. “The fire was basically all contained to the dryer itself; it did fill the entire second floor of home up with smoke.”
Behler said there no injuries.
“On her side, she was the only one home at the time of the call,” he said. “The neighbors (of the duplex) at 645 (Franklin Ave.) were also home but (there was) no impact.”
Behler said it only took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the situation under control.
He said 647 Franklin Ave. suffered minor damage, as there was a basket on top of the dryer that also burned. Fans were used to clear the smoke from the house.
Behler said firefighters were on scene for about an hour.
He said also assisting at the scene were the Bowmanstown Fire Department, Aquashicola Fire Department, and Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport Rapid Intervention Team.
“We continued them on scene because there was smoke pushing out the roof (so) we continued everybody in on the side of precaution, and utilized everybody on scene while they were there,” Behler said.
While not necessarily indicative of this particular incident, Behler offered a few safety tips for homeowners to follow.
“(Just) a reminder to check your lint traps, exhaust hose on your driers, and make sure they’re operating correctly, and not to overload your dryer,” he said. “Just things to be mindful of for everybody’s home safety.”
