Eldred prepares backup for power outages

The generator will soon be ready to go into action if electricity goes out at the Eldred Township Municipal Building and related buildings.

At a recent township supervisors meeting, Jonathan Gula, the supervisor of the Public Works Department, said the pedestal has been put into place and the generator has been affixed to it. They are waiting for the liquid propane to be delivered, which will be in January.

“We’re about 95% done,” Gula said.

The township also submitted the paperwork for a $5,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Risk Management Association for fencing to enclose the area where the propane tanks and generator will be located.

Gula said he plans to install the fencing from the building down 20 feet to the current fencing to in essence enclose the area, but it will be large enough for the crews to back in a truck and have room to work on it if needed.

Supervisor Susan McGinty gave the Kunkletown report on behalf of Donna Deihl, who could not be at the meeting.

McGinty said that the store has been very busy.

Scott Clark, the chairman of the supervisors, said he stopped in recently and “it was insane in there.” The volunteers were busy, working hard and knowing what to do.

“It’s amazing. It was great,” Clark said.

Food pantry report

Former supervisor Blaine Silfies gave a report for the West End Food Pantry. He said there is no update on the air conditioning, but measurements have been taken to upgrade the walk-in freezer. He also said they gave 401 turkeys away for Thanksgiving and help the community in various ways. They have helped veterans with rent, paid for wheelchairs, gas cards, haircuts for school, and have given money for medications and more.

“We help the community a lot,” he said.

One thing the food pantry needs help with protecting the septic system.

“We can’t keep our people off the grass for the septic system, so I’m asking the township if the Public Works can put some stakes up there so we can get our people not to drive on that grass,” Silfies said. They are also willing to put up stakes if the township doesn’t have any.

Gula said he has some stakes his crew can put in and some rope to make it more visible.

Other business

Other items mentioned at the meeting include:

• Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company will have an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 4. There is a fee.

• The Kunkletown Thrift Store is closed for the holidays and will reopen on Jan. 7.
