2025 in Review: Rabid bear attacks Jim Thorpe man

A bear that attacked a Jim Thorpe man in January tested positive for rabies.

The bear tackled and bit Andrew Nierer just before noon on Jan. 19 as he was walking on a trail to the Jim Thorpe Market.

The attack was caught on a security camera at the home of Mike Bramich, who was also involved in the attack but was uninjured.

Nierer saw the bear and attempted to walk away but the animal picked up its pace and followed him. It then reared onto its hind legs and wrestled him to the ground. The bruin bit Nierer’s arm.

“Due to the bear attacking Nierer, the neighbor (Bramich) had no other choice but to shoot and kill the bear,” Jim Thorpe police wrote in an incident report.

Nierer was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital for treatment.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission said the bear tested positive for rabies and noted that the diagnosis explained its abnormal behavior.

“Black bears under normal circumstances are not aggressive toward people,” commission spokesman Travis Lau said.
