Weatherly to change Wilbur Street parking during snow bans
Weatherly Borough Council will make changes to its snow ban to rectify issues with resident parking on Wilbur Street.
Wilbur Street residents said that they are no longer permitted to move their vehicles off the street and park in an empty lot along Wilbur Street, as it is now private.
And they have no parking on the opposite side of the street, which would be next to the old borough building.
They asked council to consider changing the snow ban rules to allow them to park on that side, while still allowing enough room for plow trucks to make the turn at the end of the street.
Council was agreeable to the suggestion, but wouldn’t be able to change its ordinance until its meeting at the end of January to accommodate for posting and advertising requirements.
Councilman Michael Bellizia noted that the changes would come after what is often the snowiest month of the year.
A temporary order allowing parking could not be granted, solicitor Jim Nanovic said, and he suggested asking the police not to cite, but they may not agree on selective enforcement.
Police Chief Michael Bogart said that if officers turned a blind eye to parking in violation of the ordinance in one area, residents in other areas would likely complain.
The police department has to enforce the ordinance as it stands, including those on Wilbur Street, or not enforce the ordinance for everyone throughout town, he said.
“It’s either going to be all or nothing,” Bogart said. “If we’re going to turn our head, I’m OK with turning my head, but we’re going to turn our head for everybody. That’s the way it’s going to have to be.
“It’s got to be fair and equal across the board.”
Bellizia said not enforcing the ordinance in town would be chaos, and they sought other solutions, such as parking at the trailhead/Weatherly Museum lot or asking the private lot owner to reconsider in the short term.
Another resident asked if residents could park in the borough building lot, which would be safer for them to walk back to their homes than the trailhead.
Borough Manager Harold Pudliner said that would work as long as people parked on the West Main Street side and moved back to the street on reverse snow ban.
Council approved making changes to the ordinance to rectify parking issues along Wilbur Street.
