Lehighton live Nativity aids the homeless
A live Nativity performance this past Saturday in the Lehighton Amphitheater captured the spirit of the season.
Presented by Ss Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, the event benefited the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society.
John Meier emceed the play, with children from Ss Peter & Paul filling the various roles and providing music and singing.
The play also featured live animals including sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits and a donkey.
“In addition to the play, we are selling baked goods and beverages to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society,” Meier said.
“The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a worldwide Catholic organization dedicated to bringing its members — and all people — closer to Jesus Christ. Its mission centers on loving God through acts of charity and compassion towards those in need.”
One of the biggest projects of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is the Lehighton Cold Weather Station.
After some issues with Lehighton zoning, the station is now set up in the old Concern Building, 560 Country Club Road, in the Mahoning Valley.
Joseph and Debra Kay Bennett have offered the use of the building at no cost to house the area’s homeless when the wind chill factor is 25 degrees or below.
Some of the actors included: voice parts, Emily Benage; Mary, played by Anna Keer; Joseph, played by Achillies Fitzgerald; Gabriel, Lucy Benage; shepherds: Paul, Alex and Ceci Benage; three Wise Men, Jack McCormack and Riley and Brendan Batista; angels, Ren Paukovits, Trinity Fitzgerald, Nicholas and Luke Keer, and Cece Bennage.
The musical director was Karen Paukovits.
The Lehighton Cold Weather Station is in need of chaperones, transportation, monetary donations and meals for the guests.
