Kidder praises officers for helping man with autism

Two Kidder Township police officers were recognized recently for helping a young man who has autism.

Police Chief Matt Kuzma thanked officers Joshua Silfee and Mason Moran for their work when finding a 22-year-old man walking along the road with no jacket at 3 a.m.

The young man said he was lost, according to a police department Facebook post.

The officers discovered the gentleman was autistic and bought a winter coat for him. The officers shared the story of the young man and other police officers made donations to him as well, which the young man’s father delivered dressed as Santa.

“Our patrol officers are equipped with specialized items in their vehicles designed to help calm and comfort individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities during what can otherwise be an overwhelming situation. Using his training, patience, and compassion, Officer Silfee was able to help (him) feel safe and supported,” the post read.

Silfee located the man’s caregiver and safely returned him home.

But his kindness didn’t stop there.

On Dec. 14, Santa delivered gifts from the North Pole, along with generous donations from members of the Kidder Township Police Department.

“We would also like to take a moment to commend Officer Joshua Silfee for a job exceptionally well done. His vigilance, compassion, and dedication to our community serve as a reminder that no good deed goes unnoticed.

Because of officers like him, Kidder Township is a safer, and kinder place,” the department said.
