West Penn seeks ID of sign thief
West Penn Township hasn’t given up on its quest to nab the sign stealing bandit who remains on the lam.
The advertisement for the sign reward was briefly discussed at Tuesday morning’s board of supervisors meeting.
Township secretary Katie Orlick said the township had been advertising, but that it was getting pretty pricey.
Earlier this month, the township offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who was stealing street signs and other property from the township.
Over the last few months, township roadmaster Jeremy Frable estimated that thousands of dollars worth of signs have been stolen.
Frable noted that the thefts — including street name signs and speed limit signs, along with stop signs — have been occurring in all areas of the township.
Even traffic cones are being stolen, he said.
Chairman Tony Prudenti asked whether the signs were being taken to scrap yards for money.
Frable said there are no records of the signs at scrap yards.
“Burn ban” signs that were recently placed were lifted, too.
Each sign and post costs about $150.
Frable said he wished there was a solution.
Frable said they are looking into some kind of micro tracking device and police are investigating.
Prudenti suggested offering the reward, an idea that was supported by supervisors Glenn Hummel and Kyle Kester.
