Blue Devils roll past Wreckers

Take no prisoners.

That was the approach Shenandoah Valley’s girls basketball team took Tuesday night, grinding past an outmanned Weatherly squad, 43-9, in a Schuylkill League Division II contest.

The Blue Devils had a knack for creating confusion, headaches and agita from the second quarter until the final horn. They controlled the game in spurts and forced the Wreckers into countless turnovers along the way.

“We’re trying to play defense, force other teams into mistakes and take advantage of those,” Shenandoah Valley coach Laura Bradley said.

Much of that advantage came in transition. If Aubrie Monaghan wasn’t flicking the ball away and finding teammates, there was the one-two punch of Jocelyn Chagolla, who finished with a game-high 17 points, and her sidekick Brittany Tufts, who banged home buckets on the way to an 11-point night.

“Our defense is the key,” Bradley continued as her team improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. “But we are getting better in the half court. We’re seeing the open girl and making good passes.”

That defense limited the Wreckers (1-2 league) to one-and-done possessions and, at times, shut out the home team entirely. Weatherly failed to score in both the first and third quarters.

Weatherly coach Jason Kane pointed to the absence of a key player as a major factor.

“We were down a girl — Lexi Kehler — she was out with the flu, and that kind of put us in a bind,” Kane said. “That’s not to take anything away from Shenandoah. I thought they played a pretty good game, and they forced us into mistakes.”

The Devils began to crank it up offensively late in the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second. Gianna Donovan completed a three-point play the old-fashioned way, before Litzy Salguero drove to the basket to close the quarter on a high note, giving Shenandoah Valley a 9-0 lead.

The Blue Devils then opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run, briefly interrupted by a basket from Weatherly’s Kelly Reiner. Monaghan buried a 3-pointer, Chagolla added a basket of her own and followed with a steal that led to three straight scores, pushing the lead to 20-8 with 4:22 left in the half.

“We’re getting better with our patience,” Bradley said. “We’re young. We’re still learning. At times, we had three freshmen and a sophomore on the floor.”

It didn’t feel like youth was being served.

The Devils were relentless on the ball, forcing 16 first-half turnovers that fueled a 26-7 halftime lead.

“We look to push the ball,” Kane said, “but without Kehler, it was a struggle. She’s a big part of our transition.”

Shenandoah Valley kept the pressure on after the break. Salguero, Monaghan, Tufts and Donovan all helped push the lead to 37-7 after three quarters, triggering the running clock.

“They do have a pretty good fundamental background,” Bradley said of her team. “They still have some learning to do, but we stressed filling the lanes, and we’re getting better at that as well.”

For now, Weatherly is focused on getting its full lineup back.

“With Kehler missing, we had to use our sixth player, who normally comes off the bench,” Kane said. “I thought we did some positive things.”

UP AND DOWN ... The teams were nearly even on the glass, with Shenandoah Valley holding a slim 34-32 rebounding edge. Chagolla led the Devils with six boards. Weatherly also had two players with six rebounds apiece — Reiner and Cortney Snyder.

MISFIRING ... Shenandoah Valley shot 19-for-52 from the floor, while Weatherly went just 2-for-39. Many of those misses were the result of the Devils’ swarming defense, which collapsed repeatedly on the ball.

HEART AND HUSTLE ... Bodies were flying all night, a good sign of hustle on both sides. Reiner scored all nine of Weatherly’s points — and earned every one of them.
