Defense, depth lift Eagles past Panther Valley
ORWIGSBURG – This may not be one of those patented, sharp-shooting Blue Mountain boys basketball teams.
You know, the ones with deadeye guards who camp behind the arc and let it fly with uncanny consistency.
Nah, not this edition.
Oh, the Eagles can still let it fly, but they seem far more willing to pressure the ball, force turnovers, run the floor and limit opponents to fewer possessions.
They did just that to a rangy Panther Valley squad Monday evening, forcing the Panthers into mistakes the way a baker makes turnovers on the way to a 60-36 victory in this Schuylkill League Division I encounter.
It also helped that the winners spread the wealth offensively, placing three players in double figures — led by quicksilver senior guard Tyeirre Meade, Beck Henninger and Evan Setlock. The trio combined for 38 of the Eagles’ points, with Meade and Henninger each scoring 13 and Setlock adding 12.
That was enough to offset a Panther Valley team that struggled in the half-court game, even though its 6-foot-10 junior center, Jarell Thomas, had a monster defensive night. Thomas swatted away roughly a dozen would-be shots, blocking inside attempts that the Eagles repeatedly challenged.
“We didn’t come out shooting the ball the best, but (Thomas) had a heck of a defensive game,” Blue Mountain coach Dustin Werdt said.
Heck, anyone at this level trying to shoot over that tall a tree is intimidating, to say the least.
“You don’t see that very often,” Werdt added, referring to Thomas’ shot-blocking performance.
Panther Valley placed two players in double figures, led by junior Jake Moyer, who poured in a career-high 19 points. Teammate Chase McArdle chipped in 10.
The Panthers were right in the thick of it early, trailing just 10-9 after one quarter before some fumbling set in during the second. Blue Mountain continued to pressure the ball, forcing erratic shots, while its offense began to click.
The Eagles ripped off a quick nine-point spurt in the first three minutes of the second quarter to seize a 19-9 lead. Meade, Cohen Werner and Sean Gaddy were all part of the rally before McArdle — a rising sophomore — halted the run with a 3-pointer and a free throw.
Blue Mountain quickly regained momentum, closing the half on an 8-5 run to take a 27-18 advantage into the break.
“I thought the intensity was there for the first half,” Panther Valley coach Pat Crampsie said. “We tried to give them a couple different looks, and I thought Jarell had a huge night, with a ton of blocks and rebounds.”
Werdt didn’t think his team shot the ball the way he had hoped.
“I didn’t think we shot the ball that well,” he said.
Truth be told, he was right. The Eagles managed just 9-for-31 shooting in the first half. Panther Valley struggled, too, going 7-for-26.
Blue Mountain, however, hit the pedal to the metal after intermission, pairing a much stronger offensive effort with suffocating defense. Panther Valley managed just one field goal in the third quarter on 11 attempts — a basket by Thomas — and his free throw accounted for all three of the Panthers’ points in a rather unsightly period.
Meanwhile, the Eagles were beginning to soar away. Meade was torrid in the quarter with seven points, and Henninger added five as Blue Mountain poured in 20 points in the frame and essentially put the game away.
“Turnovers were certainly a factor,” Crampsie said of the third quarter, during which his team committed seven. “I must say honestly, it’s to the point where our big guy (Thomas) is 6-9 and they hang on him. I feel that’s an issue right now, and that needs to be addressed.”
There was a bright spot for the Panthers in the fourth quarter, as Moyer found the 3-point line to his liking. He knocked down a pair of triples and scored all 12 of his points in the period to open the final chapter.
TOUGH NIGHT ... Panther Valley simply couldn’t find the range, shooting 11-for-46 from the field. Blue Mountain found its touch in the second half, going 14-for-27.
BY THE NUMBERS .. Both teams finished with 38 rebounds apiece. Thomas led Panther Valley with 13 boards, while McArdle added nine. Keep an eye on another Schuylkill League sophomore in Blue Mountain’s three-sport athlete, Cohen Kirby, who was a force all night with eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
