Coaldale outlines snow removal ordinance

Coaldale residents were reminded of the borough’s snow removal ordinance during Tuesday’s council meeting.

Borough Secretary Emily Krajnak said that residents, tenants or property owners are required to create a 24-inch path free of snow and ice on their sidewalks.

Sidewalks should be cleared within 12 hours of a storm’s end.

“I just got some reports that not all sidewalks were cleaned off,” Krajnak said. “They ended up freezing over and became like a skating rink.”

Krajnak said she will forward a copy of the ordinance to Tamaqua police, who patrol the borough under a shared services agreement.

In keeping with snow removal, Councilman Mike Radocha said borough crews are ready for storms.

“I wasn’t real happy with what went on at the last one but I addressed it over the last couple days. We’ll see what happens,” he said.

In an unrelated matter, council is pleased with the work being done at the Coaldale Complex by employee Jeff Gangware.

“I have to admit that Jeff Gangware is doing a fantastic job,” Councilman Wayne Figner said.

Gangware replaced broken, cracked and missing windows, cleared drains, cleaned an oil burner and shoveled snow around the entire complex.

Finally, council received two letters of interest for the position of borough solicitor and one letter of interest for zoning board solicitor.

Borough solicitor Robert Yurchak intends to step down at the end of the year.

The letters will likely be addressed at council’s reorganization meeting.
