Colder temperatures on the way next week

Today is expected to bring a mix of rain and snow, before likely changing over to all rain at some point.

Some schools that had several mountains in bus routes closed, while other were dismissing early as a result of the weather.

But looking ahead to the bigger picture, even colder temperatures appear on their way Sunday into Monday.

While temperatures will remain in the 30s the rest of this week, colder air is on the way next week, according to Bill Deger, Accuweather.com senior meteorologist.

After the weekend, Deger said a blast of cold weather is on the way, with highs in the low to mid-20s, and nighttime lows in the single digits and teens.

“It could rival some of the coldest air we’ve seen this season,” Deger said.

He said we’ve been several degrees below the historical average since the beginning of the month.

Deger said the average high this time of year is in the low 40s, with lows in the mid-20s.

“We’re at least 10, if not 15 to 20 degrees below average on those days coming up next week,” Deger said.

He attributed the weather pattern to the frequent cold fronts from Canada, specifically the polar vortex.

A polar vortex is a large, rotating low-pressure system located near the North Pole or South Pole, especially in winter.

Deger said there’s also another possible round of snow Sunday into Monday.

“It certainly will be cold enough for an accumulation,” he said. “It looks fairly cold, kind of making it a little more wintry out there.”

For those questioning if the cold snap will ever break, Deger said relief could be on the way as we approach Christmas.

“People are probably like, ‘When is this bitter cold going to end,’ ” he said. “It looks like the second half of next week through Christmastime.”

That, Deger said, is where it looks like temperatures will probably be closer to where we should be: in the 40-degrees range.

“It’s a little bit of a reversal where you think it should get colder, but it’s actually going to warm up,” he said.
