Coaldale council president resigns

Coaldale Borough Council President Claire Remington has resigned.

The longtime councilwoman and former mayor issued her resignation at the end of Tuesday’s council meeting.

“So tonight I’m going to give everybody their Christmas present, their birthday present, everything you’ve been waiting for,” Remington said.

“What’s that?” Councilman Wayne Figner asked.

“Tonight I’m going to officially resign by the end of this year,” Remington said.

Remington has two years remaining on her term.

“I wish you all the luck in the world,” she said.

Remington asked for a motion to accept the resignation.

“Wayne, will you please accept the motion on my resignation?” she asked Figner.

Figner did not make a motion so Remington asked Councilwoman Angela Krapf.

“If that’s what you want, I’ll accept it,” Krapf said.

The motion was seconded by Councilman Jacob Adamitis.

“Good, great,” Remington said.

The motion passed unanimously, with council members Kim Gavornik and Francis Hutta absent.

“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” Remington said.

She then hinted that she and her family were subjected to harassment from some residents.

After the meeting adjourned, Remington said that she and her late husband, Otis, discussed her plans to leave council. Otis Remington passed away in April.

“I promised my husband — and today is his birthday,” she said. “I promised him I would leave this year. I was going to stick it out for two more years.”

She said the “antagonism” she and her family faced from some weighed heavily on her decision.

Remington was first elected to council in 1992. She then was elected to the role of mayor for two terms beginning in 2002, and was reelected to council in 2016.
