Walnutport hosts Christmas event
The 9th Annual Walnutport Tree Lighting and Adopt-A-Tree event was held Saturday at the borough property on South Lincoln Avenue.
The Walnutport Borough’s Recreation Board organized the event. Local firefighters sponsored a candy cane hunt, Whispering Springs Horse Farms offered pony rides, and Balloons By Robin was handing out balloon animals and other creations.
Children had the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and Sparky the Fire Company dog at the event.
Event attendees had the option to treat themselves to wraps made by Queen V Wraps food truck and buy hot beverages from the Rolling Brew Coffee and Eatery trucks.
Diamond Fire Company had a soup sale, offering broccoli cheddar and chicken noodle soup, with all proceeds benefiting the fire company.
At dusk, the tree lighting took place, with Santa and those in attendance delivering a hearty “Ho-Ho-Ho” as all the beautiful lights came on.
Walnutport Borough Council Vice President and Recreation Board chairperson Jennifer Wentz said a trip to Walt Disney World inspired the tree lighting idea.
“Years ago, our family took a trip to Disney World, and I was amazed by the lights on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom. So I wanted to recreate a little of that magic here in Walnutport,” Wentz said.
Wentz said the trees cost $45 and the borough supplies the electricity to power the Christmas lights, which are on a timer. The lights go on nightly when it gets dark and stay on until about 2 a.m. Wentz added that those adopting trees were not required to live in Walnutport.
“The local community extends beyond our residents here in town,” Wentz said.
Marking their 10th year of the Adopt-A-Tree and Tree Lighting Event in 2026, Wentz said there will be exciting changes coming. These include a firetruck parade and the opportunity for the public to sponsor lights on Main Street for the first time.
The board will begin planning for next year’s event and its upcoming additions on Jan. 21.
Funds raised by the event help support the Walnutport Recreation Board and will be used for future projects, Wentz said.
Anyone who adopted a tree for the holiday season can start taking down decorations on Jan. 8. All tree stands will be removed on Jan. 11.
