Allentown man dies in crash after hitting troopers, fleeing

An Allentown man has died after he hit two state troopers, fled the scene and crashed.

Police said the troopers were treated at the hospital and released.

State police at Troop M, Fogelsville, said the officers were involved in a pursuit after attempting to make a traffic stop at 12:13 a.m.

They said the deceased, whose identity has not yet been released, was operating a 1999 Ford F150 when he led police on a chase before being stopped in the vicinity of Lehigh and 29th streets in Allentown.

Police said as troopers exited the patrol vehicle and attempted to take the driver, a 27-year-old man from Allentown, into custody, the operator of the vehicle struck the troopers with his vehicle in an attempt to cause serious bodily injury to them and then fled the scene.

Police said the victim officers were able to get back into their patrol vehicle and pursue the fleeing vehicle, which went out of control in the area of 12th and Vultee streets in the city, where it struck a fire hydrant, utility pole and the Lehigh Valley Logistics building located at 1801 S. 12th St.

Police said the driver was ejected from truck. They said the troopers arrived at the scene of the crash and immediately rendered medical assistance to the operator of the vehicle.

Police said personnel from the Allentown EMS transported both the operator of the fleeing vehicle and both troopers to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest Campus, Salisbury Township, where the man was pronounced deceased by the Lehigh County Coroner.

Police said the incident is being further investigated by a state police Major Case Team, assisted by the Allentown Police Department, Allentown Fire Department, Allentown EMS, Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist, Lehigh County Coroners Office and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
