Summit Hill planning for its annual Christmas event

Christmas is coming ... and Summit Hill officials are getting prepared.

Plans for the upcoming holiday season in the hilltop borough were discussed during a recent meeting of Summit Hill Borough Council.

Christmas on the Hill, which features Santa’s visit, free trolley rides and other activities, will occur beginning at 5 p.m. on Dec. 14 in Ludlow Park.

New Christmas lights will be installed on several streets. The lights were purchased with donations by borough residents.

A professional decorator has been hired by the Recreation Commission for parts of Ludlow Park.

Christmas on the Hill is sponsored by Recreation Commission.

Kathy Gieniec, commission chair, said trolley rides will begin at 5 p.m. and Santa is scheduled to arrive via a firetruck at about 6 p.m. The trolley rides are sponsored by the borough’s American Legion Post and are provided free.

The Summit Hill Police Department will hand out teddy bears to youngsters. Gieniec said the stuffed bears were donated by Thomas Tirpak.

Gieniec said a food concession vehicle will be on the premises.

Borough council member Marlene Basiago gave an update on the new Christmas lights to be installed. Basiago organized the fundraising campaign for the lights as a citizen of the borough.

“It was a great success,” she said of the fundraising event, stating that over $24,000 in donations were received.

Council President David Wargo praised the committee, stating the money was raised in a relatively short period.

Basiago said 36 new lights were purchased. They will be located at various locations including some at the intersections of Route 902 at White Bear Road and at Mountaintop Road.

Basiago displayed a plaque that will be mounted in the Community Center on which is contained the names of the fundraising committee and the donors.

Committee members beside Basiago are Gieniec, Joe Behovich, Georgiann Davis, Judy Hoben, Sheila Kozuch, Mary Ann Szczecina, Jayne Turner, Jade Washousky and Joe Weber.

The borough approved the hiring of Justin Starzell, whose firm is called Scripted in Style, to decorate the gazebo area of Ludlow Park.

Although the borough gave its approval, Starzell is being hired by the Recreation Commission, which is paying his fee of $750.

Gieniec said Starzell will purchase the items needed to decorate. After Christmas, he will remove the decorations and give them to the borough.
