Lehighton to host Christmas in the Park Sunday

Lehighton will host its 10th annual Christmas in the Park in the upper and lower parks on Sunday.

Sponsored by the Lehighton Parks and Recreation Board, the event will include about 150 trees, with wreaths that will line the fountain, said Tina Henninger, vice chairperson, who added that the borough hall building will also be decorated.

Henninger said food vendors will open at 2 p.m., and added there will be funnel cakes, hot dogs, soups, filling and gravy, macaroni and cheese, coffee and hot chocolate.

She said children can enter to win kids bicycles from 2-4:30 p.m. The announcement of bicycle winners will take place at 5 p.m.

Santa will arrive on a Lehighton firetruck at 4 p.m.

The Pale Moon Players, along with several other musical groups, will perform throughout.

The tree lighting ceremony will begin around 5:30 p.m.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the event, a Yule Market with about 20 vendors has been added, Henninger said.

There are between 30 and 35 sponsors this year, she said.

“Our sponsor trees this year have a social media package (with) QR codes on trees, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, expanding our social media reach,” Henninger said. “We’re making a concerted effort to reach out to the younger generation in the hopes of getting them involved in the community and possibly even volunteering.”

She added that the money raised from the event gets reinvested into the community via concerts in the summer, and to replace or add new equipment at the playgrounds.

“It’s a nice way to draw the community together as the holidays start,” Henninger said. “We’re trying to rebuild the community and joining with your community, get to know your neighbors.”

For those who are unable to attend, Henninger said they will be doing a livestream of the tree lighting, as well as virtual tours.
