UVO to dedicate stone, remember Pearl Harbor

A ceremony to observe the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor will be held Sunday in Lehighton.

The Lehighton United Veterans Organization will meet at 12:48 p.m. (7:48 a.m. Pacific Time) at the Lehighton Veterans Memorial Park, on Lehigh Drive — Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Blvd.

“Every year, we have a remembrance to the day of Pearl Harbor Day,” said Lehighton UVO Commander Kevin “Spike” Long. “It’s one of those significant events in our history that we don’t want to forget and pass it on for future generations so that they remember.”

The ceremony will begin with opening remarks from Mayor Ryan Saunders.

The speaker will be Lt. Col. Peter Semanoff, U.S. Army/professor of military science at Bucknell University.

In conjunction with the ceremony, Long said the Lehighton UVO will hold its dedication of the Veterans Memorial Park Stone.

“Also, the stone designates our Lehighton Veterans Memorial Park will be dedicated to Dave Bryfogle; he was the big push in this (before his death). We put a little inscription with his name on the memorial,” Long said. “He gave a lot of time and effort down there. One of his very last projects down there was the POW/MIA monument.”

Long said that in 2015, they moved the WWII memorial from its original location.

“David Bryfogle and myself made the proposal to move the memorial across the bypass; we thought that patch of empty ground would be a safer place to conduct our services, with that we developed the park as it is today,” Long said, adding he doesn’t believe there was ever a place dedicated to the sacrifices of our veterans in Lehighton. “It just seemed to be a suitable place, nostalgia wise, where the (former) train station was.”

Long said they are grateful to the borough for giving its consent so that property could be used for a park like that.

“It’s just blossomed since then; it just keeps growing all the time,” he said. “It’s a place where hopefully the people that walk by stop and reflect on the sacrifices that were made in our community, borough, the men and women who gave their all.”

Long noted that the next formal service of Pearl Harbor Day will take place on Dec. 7, 2026, when the borough observes the 85th anniversary of the attack.
