Local roundup: Results from Dec. 3

The Palmerton boys and girls wrestling teams both started the season with wins Wednesday, while the Northern Lehigh girls wrestling squad secured its first-ever victory in its opening match.

Elsewhere, the Tamaqua boys and girls swimming teams each picked up wins over Mahanoy Area.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Palmerton–Palisades

Palmerton received six forfeits to help move past Palisades, 42-30, in the season-opening match for both teams.

The Blue Bombers got forfeits from Sofia Amorim (106), Izabella McFarland (118), Alexxa Winger (130), Lea Schaible (142), Nickayla Tomsic (148) and Nicole Jennings (235).

Cassidy Merkel (124) notched a fall for Palmerton in 1:40.

Addison Banda, Autumn Khuu and De’Ja Gold all recorded falls to help Northern Lehigh win its first-ever varsity match, downing Southern Lehigh 35-30.

Banda (112), Khuu (130) and Gold (170) each gained pins at their respective weights. Ynna Holva (136) was victorious due to an injury, Anna Trelease (142) had a technical fall, and Elaina Ray won by forfeit.

A late surge fell short for Pleasant Valley on opening night, as East Stroudsburg South escaped with a 42-33 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Surrendering bonus points early hurt the Bears, but pins by both Josie Fetterman (148) and Jocelynn Cervenka (235), along with a few forfeits in their favor, helped pull the locals within reach of a win.

Teammate Emilynn Stipeck added a decision at 142.

Landon Eckhart (107), Thomas Pasquariello (114), Colton Becker (121) and Steele Kalik (127) all received forfeits, while Connor Messinger (133), Antonio Oller (172) and Parker Davis (189) produced pins. Jaxs Miller (139) and Hector Garcia (285) each had technical falls.

Schuylkill Vy.–Tamaqua

Tamaqua nearly recovered from a slow start in the first half, but Schuylkill Valley came out on top with a 53-45 non-conference win.

After trailing 28-13 at the half, the Blue Raiders outscored the visiting Panthers 32-25 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to come away with their first win of the season.

The Panthers’ Zachary Reeser netted a game-high 21 points, while teammates Logan Cammauf and Alex Aletras finished with 11 and 10, respectively.

Gavin Edmonds paced the Blue Raiders with a team-high 15 points, while Jakin Tamagini followed with 14.

Weatherly–Linc. Leadership

Lincoln Leadership got the best of Weatherly for a 59-33 non-conference win on its home floor.

Arielle Taylor sparked the Lions’ offense, recording 12 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. Teammate Chloe Henigan just missed double digits with eight points.

Kelly Reiner posted 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half, while Alexia Kehler finished with six for the Wreckers.

Weatherly couldn’t make the most of its trips to the foul line, finishing 16-for-34.

Tamaqua opened the regular season with a sweep of Mahanoy Area in Schuylkill League action.

The Blue Raiders cruised to an 88-16 win in the boys’ meet, while the Lady Raiders swam their way to a 96-44 victory in the girls’ competition.

Ben Hunsicker recorded first-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and 200 IM for Tamaqua.

Shaylee Gormley (200 free, 100 fly) and Savannah Wilson (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) also added a pair of firsts for the Lady Raiders.

Weatherly-Panther Valley

Weatherly ran away with a 45-11 win over Panther Valley.

The Wreckers’ Mackenzie Graham led all scorers with 20 points, while Mikayla Pugh chipped in with eight.

Lucy Uher finished with a team-high five points for the Panthers.
