First storm of season drops 3 to 5 inches of snow
Shovels, plows and snowblowers got their first action in some time as most of the region received anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow Monday night into Tuesday.
The heaviest of the snow arrived during Tuesday’s morning commute from around 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., according to Adam Douty, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
“So, the timing of it was not very good at all,” Douty said. “Watch for potentially slick surfaces this morning.”
That same rule of thumb applies to Thursday morning, said Douty, who noted that anything that does melt could refreeze.
“There is a shot of some cold weather coming up, as tomorrow a cold front will move through around midday into the afternoon hours with a brief snow shower or two, not much in the way of accumulation,” he said. “There could be a quick burst of snow that could bring a (small) coating.”
However, Douty said Thursday night into Friday morning is going to be especially cold, with a low of 8 degrees, and a high Friday of only 23, essentially midwinter type of weather.
Fortunately, the weekend looks good at this point, with high temperatures in the mid-30s in what he termed a fairly generic winter type weekend.
Schools were closed Tuesday, which meant youths were able to frolic for as little or as long as they chose on the first snow day of the season.
Jessica Weierbach, of South Third Street, was busy tending to her children, Carter, 4, and Charlotte, 1.
Weierbach said her son, Carter, took to the snow with the greatest of ease.
As for her daughter, Charlotte, not so much.
“Carter loves it,” Weierbach said. “We were having a snowball fight.”
Douty said this storm came earlier than last year, aside from a few coatings here and there.
“Pretty much on par for the season,” he said.
Douty added the next chance of wintry weather could arrive the middle of next week.
