Family Promise to open warming shelter in January

Those at Family Promise of Carbon County want all to be warm when cold weather strikes.

The temporary homeless facility at 140 W. Mill St. in Nesquehoning will open a Cold Weather Shelter on Jan. 1, and will operate it daily through March, said Cathy Lamm, executive director.

“We had a day shelter in the past but this will be run 24 hours a day,” Lamm said.

It will be open for overnight stays to those who apply in advance, and for mornings, afternoons or evenings for those who would just like to drop by to beat the chill.

“We will house (up to) 12 individuals overnight,” Lamm said. “To apply for this program, they would need to call our shelter and do an intake request.”

Men, women, couples and children are welcome to stay at the cold weather shelter, which will be inside Family Promise’s family community center.

“Normally in our regular shelter, we just take families with children and single women — this is for everyone,” Lamm said.

During the day, it is open to walk-ins.

“I encourage seniors and those who are on a fixed income, struggling with heat bills and what not to visit. It will be a nice, warm place to go during the day if they don’t want to turn their heat up,” Lamm said. “They could come, have some lunch, a warm drink, watch some TV and play cards.”

As it sets up the space inside its family community center, the organization is accepting donations of single-ply toilet paper, paper towels, twin sheets, pillows and gift cards for Redners, Walmart and Aldi.

A case manager will be on hand but volunteers are also needed and can help with setup, meal preparation, distributing snacks, housekeeping and answering phone calls.
