Nesquehoning council member dies

A longtime Nesquehoning volunteer and councilwoman, who was known for her big heart and love for the community, has passed away.

Mary Fox passed away Saturday in Bethlehem unexpectedly, surrounded by her family and close friends.

“My friend Mary was not only a pillar of support in my life but a passionate advocate for our town,” said fellow council member Lois Kuba. “It’s because of her and Mr. (Frank) Jacobs that I’m on council. Her unwavering commitment to serving our town through council and countless civic initiatives was truly inspiring.

“She dedicated herself to positive changes and unity. Her love for Nesquehoning was evident in all she did. Her legacy will continue to motivate and guide us for years to come.”

Fox served as vice president of borough council, with her term expiring at the end of this year. She was elected to another four-year term this past November and would have taken the oath of office for Nesquehoning in January. She had sat on council since 2010.

In addition to serving on council, Fox was known throughout the community, most recently getting certified to serve as Meeds United Methodist Church’s pastor; as well as a volunteer with the area Girl Scout program.

Over the years, she served on the Nesquehoning Planning Commission, was the chair of the sewer committee, volunteered at Coaldale Hospital as a candy striper, was a camp director at Camp Evergreen; and a member of Nesquehoning Historical Society, just to name a few.

She was named 2003 Volunteer of the Year by the Nesquehoning Woman’s Club; a 2008 Community Hero at Mauch Chunk Trust Company.

As news spread of Fox’s passing, several organizations released statements on their Facebook pages.

“The Nesquehoning Recreation Commission would like to extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and community of Mary Fox. Mary was a pillar of so many communities inside and outside of our borough. She has always had the best interest of those she served and cared for at heart. Mary spent countless hours guiding the Recreation Commission for the betterment of our town and it’s people. Today and always we remember the wonderful person she was. Rest peacefully our friend.”

“Heaven gain another angel last night, our Girl Scout community and Borough of Nesquehoning lost a great one,” posted Betsy Arner. “Mary you were a great friend, mentor and most of all a great Girl Scout leader, I am so glad I learned from you.”

“The officers and members of the Nesquehoning Hose Company extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Councilwoman Mary Fox. Mary was a dedicated public servant who cared deeply for our community and worked tirelessly to make Nesquehoning a better place. Her leadership, kindness, and commitment will not be forgotten. May she rest in peace, and may her loved ones find comfort in the lasting impact she made on our borough.”

“Mary you did so much for our company and we could not thank you enough,” New Columbus Fire Company posted. “While on council you helped us acquire our fire engine and helped us with anything we needed. The borough is never going to be the same. We had the privilege of having Mary bless our members and truck in September for the dedication. Our condolences are with her family and friends.”
