More than $50,000 has been raised to establish the John and Jane Malarkey Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of longtime Marian Catholic High School principal John P. Malarkey ’51, who died in June 2025. The fund will support future Marian students and reflect Malarkey’s decades of service to the school.
The newly released Fall 2025 edition of Marian Magazine and the 2024 — 2025 Annual Report of Gifts included an eight-page tribute to Malarkey, highlighting his impact on the school community and generations of students.
The publication also notes the retirements of two longtime educators, alumna Rita DeFebo Nietz ’77 and Judy Martini.
This year’s Annual Report of Gifts outlines contributions of more than $1.67 million and hundreds of volunteer hours during the 2024 — 2025 fiscal year.
More than 8,000 copies of the magazine will be mailed in the U.S. and abroad at no cost to the school, thanks to a donor who covered all design, printing, and postage expenses. A digital version is available at https://www.mariancatholichs.org/annual-report.

Since opening in 1954, Marian has graduated more than 8,000 students from across the region, including alumni of its predecessor schools — Saint Ann’s, Saint Mary’s, Saint Jerome’s, and Mauch Chunk Catholic — as well as the former Bishop Hafey and Cardinal Brennan high schools.
Marian High School offers a faith-based, college preparatory education rooted in Roman Catholic tradition.
