3 to 6 inches of snow forecast

The region is in store to receive its first significant snowfall of the year, with between 3 to 6 inches expected to drop Monday night into Tuesday.

Kai Kerkow, meteorologist, forecasting operations, with AccuWeather, said a low-pressure system moving through the Northeast will spread snow across the Commonwealth.

Kerkow said the arrival time of accumulated snow is expected to start between 5 to 8 a.m. Tuesday for east central Pennsylvania and move out of the area between 4 and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

She said the precipitation type is expected to primarily remain as snow north of Allentown, but sleet and rain is expected to mix in with snow in Allentown and areas to the south and east.

Kerkow said snowfall amounts will be primarily between 3 to 6 inches north of Allentown, and near 1 to 3 inches near Allentown, but there could be locally higher amounts in the higher terrain.

Snowfall rates can reach 0.50-1.00” per hour at times, which can result in roads becoming snow covered, she said.

With this being the first significant winter storm of the season, anyone with travel plans tomorrow may want to consider altering their travel plans to a different time, Kerkow said.

“Anyone who is on the road should plan on slow travel, and plan on needing extra time to complete their trip,” Kerkow said. “Keeping extra warm clothes and a shovel in your car in case you get stuck or stranded is also never a bad idea.”

Kerkow added that high temperatures on Tuesday will be in the low to mid-30s, with lows Tuesday night in the mid-20s.

She said temperatures midweek will be in the mid to upper 30s, with lows in the 10s and 20s.

“Snow melting during the day as temperatures rise above freezing could refreeze at night, causing a few slippery spots on roads and sidewalks,” Kerkow said.
