Gilbert Legion post serves Thanksgiving dinner
The American Legion Post 927 had open doors this Thanksgiving, welcoming members of the community for a Thanksgiving dinner featuring all the traditional trimmings and desserts.
This annual event shows the post’s dedication to giving back to the community it serves.
Post Commander Everett Shaver said, “This is the veterans giving back to the community. We’ve been hosting this Thanksgiving dinner every year for at least the past 15 years, since I’ve been here. We open our doors to locals who may not have anywhere else to go, especially those with limited means. It’s our way of giving back.”
The event drew a dedicated group of volunteers, including veterans, their spouses, and the children of legionnaires. Local organizations also contributed to the effort, including the motorcycle organization B.A.C.K. (Bikers Against Cop Killers) and members of the Latin American Motorcycle Association, lending a helping hand in serving and preparing the meals.
Veteran Zacheriah Taylor echoed the sentiment shared by many that evening, saying, “This is a way to give back to the community.”
With humility, he added, “I wish we could do even more.”
Paul Shemitz, one of the many volunteers, shared that around 39 people came together to make the event a success.
Among those enjoying the holiday at the tables were Glenn and Delila Rowan. Glenn said, “It means a lot to give back to the community and share with people who may not be as fortunate.”
Delila said, “It’s about camaraderie. People want to come together and not feel alone this holiday. The community is giving back, and everyone is going home happy. This is our community.”
The community gathered around the tables, laughing, engaged in conversations, and the holiday spirit this Thanksgiving united them. The event was a sincere reminder of the importance of giving back, supporting community, and one another, especially during the holiday season.
