Bo Tkach Foundation donates to pantries

The Bo Tkach Under the Helmet and Hat Foundation last week distributed more than $30,000 in donations to area food pantries to assist them in their preparation of distributions in time for Thanksgiving.

“Our board members wanted to do our part in assisting area food pantry volunteers in the great work they do in helping to put food on the tables of those who are less fortunate,” said Jim Tkach, chief executive officer of the foundation.

The foundation made donations to the seven area food pantries (Lehighton, Palmerton, Jim Thorpe, Summit Hill, Lansford, Nesquehoning and Weatherly) in Carbon County that are a part of the Shepherd House program, as well as the program operated in the Northern Lehigh region.

“We realize the challenges these volunteers have in keeping up with the increasing needs, and many of them have told us the need is growing at a rapid pace and that keeping their pantry shelves stocked in a constant struggle,” Tkach said.

“We are also cognizant of the effects of the most recent government shutdown that affected the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, so these donations are also aimed at assisting low- and no-income persons to maintain adequate nutrition and health.”

Tkach added, “The foundation is blessed to have the tremendous support that it has received since its inception and our board remains committed to its mission of creating awareness of mental health issues, while providing essential funding for youth programs, scholarships and otherwise inaccessible mental health screening and treatment.”

While continuing to fund costs associated with counseling services for children, the foundation last year initiated a pilot program, Improving Access to Outpatient Behavioral Counseling, whereby it provided eight area high schools funding to improve accessibility for the behavioral health counseling needs of school-aged children.

“If we can play any role at all in helping people to live happier and healthier lives, as long as we can continue to do so, we will,” Tkach said.

The foundation will sponsor its annual Thanksgiving Day 5-K Turkey Trot at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Palmerton Community Park. The organization anticipates that about 900 runners and walkers will take part in the event.

Registrations are still being accepted for anyone wanting to take part. Just register at the park prior to the start of the race.
