Tamaqua property owners might see a small jump in their real estate taxes in 2026.
While Tamaqua Borough Council voted to tentatively adopt and advertise the 2026 budget, the spending plan is still a work in progress.
“This isn’t final,” council President Brian Connely said at Tuesday’s meeting. “This is just the first step on it. Just so everybody’s aware of that.”
The tentative budget sets the real estate tax rate at 4.75 mills, with 4.48 mills for general purposes, 0.20 mills for the equipment fund, 0.05 mills for the Wabash improvement fund, and 0.02 mills for the streetlight fund.
“We were notified today that the county did their final numbers from the assessment,” Connely said, referring to the recent reassessment in Schuylkill County. “So where Tamaqua used to be at a 23.75 millage assessment, we’ve gone down to 4.75 (mills).”
He noted that through the reassessment, approximately one third of properties decreased in value, one third increased and one third remained the same.
“We can’t honestly tell you — it all depends on how the property is assessed,” he said.
For the most part, he said, it appears that the taxes will rise by less than a half mill.
“There’s more to come on that,” Connely said. “We just got that (information from Schuylkill County) so we will be playing around with these numbers as we go. We’ll get the process started and use this as a baseline to start.”
