Business owner looks for answers to robberies
For six years, Bright Star Fuel on Route 209 in Brodheadsville has been a good business, but this year has been challenging. This year, it’s been robbed three times.
“This year is getting crazy,” said Jagjit Chahal, the owner of the gas station and convenience store.
Chahal said he has reported the crimes and has 13 surveillance cameras inside and outside of the store, but no arrests have been made.
“Maybe I need a guard,” Chahal said. “It is frustrating. This is a nice place.”
The most recent robbery occurred at 5:58 p.m. on Nov. 9. Chahal has video footage. A man entered the store and seeing that the store clerk was away from the cash register, he walked behind the counter and stole several packs of cigarettes and lottery tickets.
“He saw an opportunity, so he stole,” Chahal said.
Before that, a video shows a different man breaking the lock to the store after 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 22. When he opened the door, the alarm went off. He rushed ahead toward the back of the store and broke into a safe where money was kept. There he found money and stole about $5,000 in cash.
“It’s not good,” Chahal said.
Chahal said he gave them the license plate number of the car of the man who broke in and stole the money. He knows the state police are working on the thefts.
“It’s a slow process,” he said.
Prior to these recent thefts, Chahal said he didn’t have much of a problem. Sometimes items like candy would be missing, but nothing like this.
“I’m a regular guy trying to run my business,” Chahal said. “I’m just trying to survive in this place.”
