America250PA donates childrens’ book to libraries
The Education Subcommittee of the Monroe County America250PA Commission commemorated the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States of America (1776-2026) with a presentation of a book on Oct. 24 to schools and public libraries in Monroe County.
“K is for Keystone: A Pennsylvania Alphabet” is a beautifully illustrated book that highlights the rich history, culture and significance of Pennsylvania within the broader American story, according to the Education Subcommittee.
“We thought it would be nice to donate copies to all of our school libraries and public libraries to make it available to everyone,” county Commissioner David Parker said.
“It highlights significant people, events and places in Pennsylvania. As part of this historic celebration, representatives from each Monroe County school district and public library will receive a copy of the commemorative book.”
Originally published in 2003, the hardcover, alphabet book was written by Kristen Kane and illustrated by Laura Knoor. It is part of the Discover America State by State books, which is a series of 52 books.
Parker explained that the book has been used by America250PA for the Keystone Classroom Initiative, a statewide program to read to classrooms across the Commonwealth.
The book also is available to the public on Amazon, which describes the book as “a wonderful introduction to many of Pennsylvania’s unique features for readers young and old.”
“Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water, Gettysburg, Ben Franklin’s inventions, the Liberty Bell — there is so much to learn about Pennsylvania’s history and geography. Learn about the legend of Betsy Ross, where the word Crayola comes from, and how Pennsylvania came to be known as The Keystone State.”
The presentation to Monroe County’s schools and libraries was held at the Monroe County Courthouse Plaza.
