Wreaths Across America to be held in Sky-View

Wreaths Across America will once again be held at Sky-View Memorial Park in Hometown, with the goal to honor each veteran with a wreath.

Volunteers are hoping to raise enough funds to place 3,800 wreaths — one for each local hero resting there — so that their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.

To date, 752 wreaths have been sponsored, representing just 19% of the total goal. Organizers are encouraging the community to help bridge the gap.

“We owe a debt to our country’s heroes that we can never fully repay, but we can honor their sacrifice — and we must,” said Glenn Hummel, West Penn Township, one of the nine location coordinators for Sky-View. “Each December, we see families, Scouts, church groups and neighbors come together to lay wreaths and remember those who served. It’s humbling, heartwarming and a reminder of what this season is truly about.”

Checks or money orders are due by Nov. 19 and should be made payable to “Wreaths Across America” and mailed to 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, PA 18252. Online orders can be placed at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/PA0524 and will be accepted until Dec. 2.

A program will begin at noon Dec. 13 at the cemetery, with the laying of wreaths to follow. Parking will be available at Hometown Farmers Market. Buses will begin transporting volunteers beginning at 10 a.m.

Sky-View will mark its sixth year of participation and is one of more than 4,900 locations taking part in Wreaths Across America.

Volunteer opportunities are also available by visiting www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/PA0524.

Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992.

The organization’s mission is carried out each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at thousands of veterans cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.
